Tamburitza Extravaganza 2007 - Reno

I've read a lot at Tamburaland about this Extravaganzas (Ganzas), but I still have only a vague idea what it is... It's not a typical festival (like Pozega, Pitomaca etc.) since I think there aren't any awards (or I may be mistaken) and I think that each band performs several songs.

I would be glad if someone could give us a first-hand impression about the Extravaganzas (either as a spectator or performer) and is anybody from this forum going to attend this year's Ganza in Reno?

I'm going to try and go, but I have to be able to afford the plane tickets and hotel rooms, along with tipping the bands.

Moja mama (basu sviraci od Sarena) is playing in Reno, so she'll be there.

I've performed, and also attended the Extravaganzas as a 'spectator'. This year, my zena is the Chairman in charge of Banquet & Advance Ticket sales. Here's a brief rundown;

- Every year the Tamburitza Extravaganza is held in a different city in the United States. This year it is taking place in Reno, Nevada.

- Twenty, to twenty-five tambura groups are invited to provide the music for the 'Ganza.

- An Extravaganza is a four-day event which includes a Welcome Dance (with alternating orchestras) on Thursday evening. A formal concert is then held on Friday evening, and then another on Saturday afternoon. Half the groups perform on Friday, and the others on Saturday. Usually each orchestra is given twelve to fifteen minutes of stage time, in order to perform up to four of their best songs or instrumentals. After the concerts, attendees head to the 'breakout room' sessions, where individual bands perform in a more intimate atmosphere in seperate room/suites. It is here that spectators can get 'up close & personal' with their favorite groups, as they can stroll from room to room, listening to the various orchestras. Along with the smaller 'breakout rooms', a large ballroom is provided each evening, in which designated tambura groups provide continuous dance music. On Sunday, a 'Surviovors Picinic' is usually held, in which bands take turns entertaining the guests that remain.

Basically, a Tamburitza Extravaganza is four days of NON-STOP singing, dancing, drinking, and good times.

Hrvoje, if you come to Reno, you can stay in my hotel room free of charge (beware there may not be much sleeping, and when there is there may be another 2 to 4 people in the room, it's cheaper that way.)

Would love to help out a hrvatski brat.

I just looked up plane tickets from Zagreb to Reno. 756.00USD (about 580 Euros) roundtrip on www.cheapoair.com (flying lufthansa and united airlines)

Even though this event is billed as a 'Tamburitza' Extravaganza, we 'allow' VIOLIN (and accordion) players to participate as well. So, we would love to have you & your fiddle in Reno this year.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I guess I'll have to pass... Some other time maybe. Although I would definitely like to visit the States (to brush up my English among other things)....
